If we take only the storyline, then everything lies on the surface: the story begins with the fact that the boy, on behalf of whom the story is being narrated, decides to move to the district center from the village. There was no eight-year school in the "small homeland", and an able child needed to get an education. So the mother decided, and the villagers supported her. The selfless woman could barely make ends meet: she had two more younger, completely sloppy.

If the director had found out about this, it could have come to an exception and sending the boy home: the director was intolerant of such things.

Lidia Mikhailovna tried to help the child in any way she could think of: calling her to her home to feed, sent a parcel to his name (supposedly from her mother), but the guy immediately realized about the fraud: there were pasta and hematogen in the box - such luxury in his native village was never heard. Despite the pangs of hunger, he returned the parcel to the teacher, not wanting to accept alms.

And then Lydia Mikhailovna came up with a brilliant idea, as it seemed to her: she as if jokingly suggested the child to play “zameryashki” - a kind of analogue of “chika”, first just like that, then for money. Being experienced in this game, she quietly succumbed, and her student began to win. With this money he was again able to buy milk for himself. And things with the French went much better.
